Citizen Solar is a new community-owned renewable energy initiative dedicated to making Southend and its surrounding communities greener, more resilient, and socially inclusive. We’re excited to announce that we are launching soon — and we want you to be part of this journey!
Our First Step: The Power Down Project
Power Down is our initial flagship project focused on helping local residents reduce energy use and cut bills through practical energy efficiency measures and community support. The aims of the project are to:
- Reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change
- Lower energy bills for households, especially those struggling with fuel poverty
- Assist residents in applying for grants and funding to make their homes more energy-efficient
- Raise awareness of the Priority Services Register which offers free support to vulnerable residents
- Offer free domestic thermal imaging
- Provide free energy-saving items such as radiator reflectors, draught excluders, LED bulbs and other practical tools
- Offer free home visits and energy efficiency assessments
- Create skills training and green job opportunities for Southend residents with a special focus on youth training and development

What's Next? Power Up Projects
Once Power Down is established, we’ll expand with Power Up projects to generate clean energy locally, including:
- Community-owned solar installations on schools, churches, social housing and public/business buildings

- Skills training and green job creation for Southend residents
- Reinvest profits into education sustainability and social needs projects that benefit the community
Together, these projects will help Southend lead the way in community energy and sustainability.
